Well, no, it’s simply not relatable.
The solution?
Inject some genuine internal struggle; a yearning, a fear, or a misconception.
Next up is the infamous “I’m not like the other girls” cliché.
If your protagonist truly differs, demonstrate it, don’t just proclaim it.
And then there’s manufactured tension.
Otherwise known as fake cliffhangers – injury, death, breakup or any other dramatic moment introduced merely for effect, without real consequences.
It’s like that misleading cliffhanger where you fear for an imminent car crash, only to have the next chapter begin with, “Just kidding! Jake swerved just in time – calamity dodged – all’s well!”
If you’re guilty of such tactics, Abbie’s metaphorical crosshairs are trained on you. (It might be time to exit.)
